CLIMATE CHANGE
Is Changing Our World
By burning oil, coal and gas to supply the world's energy including electricity and transport we are causing the Earth to get warmer.
Temperatures have only increased by an average of 0.6C worldwide since 1900 but are already causing significant damage - floods are increasing, droughts are more frequent, regional temperatures are setting new records, sea level's rising and the number of natural disasters has increased almost three fold since the 1960's. By 2050 it is estimated that there will be 150 million climate change refugees (3m a year) . By 2100 however the world's average temperature is estimated to rise by up to almost TEN TIMES the current increase, by up to 5.8C - What scale of devastation will this cause to our planet ?
Your help is needed to stop our world warming.
Approx 75% of global warming caused by mankind in the last 20 years is due to the use of fossil fuels - oil, coal and gas to supply the world's energy, including electricity and transport. To stop climate change we urgently need to stop using fossil fuels - We need to change our source of energy from oil, coal and gas to renewable energy sources - Using the energy that exists within Nature to power our world - solar, wind, tidal, wave, hydropower, biomass (crops) and geothermal.(heat from below ground) We also need to save energy to reduce the release of carbon dioxide.
Telling them you are very concerned about climate change and urge them to develop climate friendly energy policies and accelerate the rapid expansion of renewable energy by providing capital costs for the building of renewable energy schemes. Ask them to cease subsidies to fossil fuels and nuclear power.
This is very important to begin a market led expansion of renewable energy based on consumer support. Just ring up your existing electricity supplier to see if they have a green tariff or look on the internet for one.
Use energy efficient lightbulbs, turn off lights, don't leave TV's, videos etc on standby, boil only so much water as you need, use lids on saucepans, turn your thermostat down 1C, insulate your home, buy energy efficient domestic appliances, share car journeys, use public transport where possible. Try to cycle more, use a fuel efficient car and fly abroad less
